Arsenal beats Palace 4-1 to extend Premier League lead

Bukayo Saka struck twice as Arsenal moved a step closer to the Premier League title by beating Crystal Palace 4-1 on Sunday.

The Gunners are eight points clear of current champions Manchester City, having played a game more, reports AP.

Palace, who fired manager Patrick Vieira this week, saw its relegation concerns deepen after stretching its winless run to 13 games in all competitions.

Saka scored twice and set up the opener for Gabriel Martinelli, becoming the first Premier League player this season to reach double figures for both goals and assists.

Granit Xhaka was also on the score sheet. Martinelli opened the scoring the 28th minute after turning in Saka’s cross.

Saka added a second in the 43rd after collecting a pass from Ben White and finishing low past Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth.

Saka then saw an effort cleared off the line as Arsenal started the second half in the same dominant manner as it ended the first.

Xhaka made it 3-0 in the 55th after exchanging passes with Leandro Trossard and finishing from close range.

Schlupp pulled one back for Palace in the 63rd, but any thoughts of an unlikely comeback were ended when Saka struck again in the 74th.

Palace is three points above the relegation zone, but fellow strugglers Bournemouth, West Ham, Leicester, Nottingham Forest and Leeds have games in hand.

Norwegian skier Braathen wins men’s World Cup slalom title

Norwegian skier Lucas Braathen fought back tears after wrapping up the men’s slalom season title Sunday, finishing runner-up in the last race at the World Cup Finals.

The globe capped an emotional campaign for Braathen, which included two slaloms victories and five podium results, reports AP.

Ramon Zenhaeusern held on to his first-run lead to beat Braathen by 0.06 seconds and win the race, but the result was not enough for the Swiss skier to overtake the Norwegian in the standings as he remained in third position.

Henrik Kristoffersen finished the race 0.63 behind in third and trailed his teammate Braathen by 52 points in second place in the final standings. Kristoffersen had won the slalom title for the third time last season.

After finishing his decisive run in warm and sunny conditions, Braathen bent over and buried his face in his gloves, then looked up and made the V sign with both hands.

Rani Khedira leads Union Berlin to 3rd place in Bundesliga

Former Germany midfielder Sami Khedira watched as his brother Rani Khedira led Union Berlin to third place in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over visiting Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

Rani Khedira was captain in place of the absent Christopher Trimmel and he broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with the final say in a goalmouth scramble after a corner.

His older brother, who last played for city rival Hertha Berlin before retiring in 2021, tried capturing the celebrations on his mobile phone, reports AP.

Frankfurt had created more chances but failed to put any away with Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow at his best for the home team.

Union forward Sheraldo Becker had a fine strike ruled out for offside before substitute Kevin Behrens sealed the win after a long kick from Rönnow in the 75th.

Behrens was quickest to the ball and he squeezed his shot through the legs of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp for his fifth Bundesliga goal of the season.

t stretched Union’s unbeaten run at home in the league to 18 games and lifted the team three points ahead of Leipzig and Freiburg, which played at Mainz later Sunday.

Also later, Bayern Munich played at Bayer Leverkusen with the 10-time defending champion needing to avoid defeat to return to the top of the league.
