Sweegen’s Rebaudioside M receives full authorization for use in the United Kingdom

Bestevia Reb M expands sugar reduction solutions in the U.K.and is now available to food and beverage producers.

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., May 17, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Global sweetness and flavor innovator, Sweegen has announced that its Bestevia® Rebaudioside M (Reb M) has been fully authorized for use in the United Kingdom (U.K.) This regulatory approval marks a significant milestone for Sweegen, as it becomes the first and only company to receive authorization for any steviol glycosides produced using alternative technologies in the U.K.

Reb M, a high-purity steviol glycoside derived from the stevia plant, is renowned for its clean and sugar-like taste profile. It offers a natural, zero-calorie sweetness solution, making it an ideal choice for food and beverage manufacturers seeking to reduce sugar content and provide healthier options to consumers. Sweegen’s nature-based sweeteners, including its Reb M, offer a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional sugar.

Brands in the U.K. have eagerly anticipated the authorization of Sweegen’s Bestevia Reb M during the initial formulation phase and tastings. They are actively collaborating with Sweegen’s food and beverage applications experts based at its EMEA U.K. Innovation Studio in Reading, England, to integrate this highly sought-after stevia ingredient, along with Sweegen’s outstanding taste modulation and unique sweeteners, into their formulations.

Damian Bellusci, Vice President of Sales EMEA/APAC at Sweegen, expressed his excitement about the authorization, stating, “We are extremely proud to be the pioneers in securing full authorization for Bestevia Reb M in the U.K. This milestone reaffirms Sweegen’s commitment to providing innovative, nature-based, and sustainable sweetening solutions to the industry. Reb M offers food and beverage manufacturers an exceptional tool to meet consumer demands for healthier products without compromising taste.”

The decision to authorize the bioconversion manufacturing method for steviol glycosides, including Reb M, was made by the Minister for Primary Care and Public Health in relation to England, the Welsh Ministers in relation to Wales, and the Minister for Public Health, Women’s Health and Sport in relation to Scotland. The authorization is per Article 10(1) of retained Regulation 1333/2008, fulfilling the requirements.

The authorized manufacturing method allows for using steviol glycosides, including Reb M, in the Great Britain (GB) market. The Regulations provide updated terms of authorization for using this method in GB, with the terms being similar to those in the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland. For the latest information, referring to the relevant EU Regulations on the EUR-Lex website is recommended.

Casey McCormick, Vice President of Global Innovation at Sweegen, emphasized the significance of Reb M in driving product innovation. “The approval of Bestevia Reb M in the UK represents a very positive step forward for brands looking to improve the nutrition profile of their products. The clean, sweet taste of our Bestevia Reb M enables new approaches to reduce and eliminate sugar in a way that exceeds consumers’ expectations  and supports public health objectives to reduce sugar consumption.”

Hadi Omrani, Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs at Sweegen, highlighted the rigorous safety and compliance standards behind Bestevia Reb M’s authorization. Omrani stated, “At Sweegen, we prioritize safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Obtaining full authorization for Bestevia Reb M in the U.K. required thorough scientific evaluations and stringent assessments to ensure its safety for consumption. This achievement reflects our commitment to delivering superior products that meet the highest industry standards.”

Sweegen is dedicated to revolutionizing the sweetener market with innovative solutions that promote healthier choices without compromising taste. The full authorization of Bestevia Reb M in the U.K. reinforces Sweegen’s leadership in the nature-based sweetener space and positions the company as a trusted partner for food and beverage manufacturers worldwide.

Sweegen recently attained FEMA GRAS status for sweet proteins brazzein and thaumatin II, complementing steviol glycosides in food and beverage production. With the addition of brazzein and thaumatin II, Sweegen continues to expand its portfolio of safe and effective taste-modulating flavors that can help food and beverage manufacturers meet the demand for healthier and delicious products to align with consumers’ holistic approaches to wellness. Brazzein is the star ingredient in Sweegen’s newly launched Sweetensify flavors for taste modulation, an ideal flavors tool for brands seeking to create sugar-like tastes in food and beverages.

DI’s Executive Director Highlights to QNA World-Class Achievements Ahead of Tomorrow’s 7th MA Cohort Graduation

Doha Institute for Postgraduate Studies (DI) will hold Thursday a graduation ceremony for the seventh cohort of master’s students.

Speaking with Qatar News Agency , DI’s Executive Director of the Administrative and Financial Division Eman Al Sulaiti said the ceremony befits DI’s academic and scientific reputation and position, satisfies its administration’s aspirations and please its graduates. The ceremony celebrates multisector achievements over the past eight years that have bolstered the DI’s position locally, regionally, and internationally, Al Sulaiti said.

There are 186 male and female graduates from the seventh cohort – 121 from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and 65 from the School of Economics, Administration and Public Policy. This number takes the DI’s total MA graduates since its inception in 2015 to 1,040 graduates from more than 50 countries around the world, with some of whom are now pursuing PhD tracks in renowned world universities.

The seventh cohort students include 93 on scholarships from Qatar Fund for Development, part of the State of Qatar’s scholarship program for international students, Al Sulaiti said.

Extending congratulations to all graduates and wishing them success in their academic and practical careers, Al Sulaiti expressed the DI’s pride in graduating students armed with science and knowledge, and able to contribute and address the needs and development of their countries.

She also highlighted the academic, research, institutional and organizational achievements in line with the DI’s objectives to qualify cadres that address the aspirations and needs of the Arab region in sustainable development and intellectual and social advancement. The DI seeks to graduate researchers able to contribute to the production of knowledge in accordance with international standards, and professionals who are well versed in advanced skills in their specializations, she said. She also highlighted the DI’s strategies integrating teaching and learning with scientific research and the values of integrity and professionalism.

An independent institution for postgraduate studies, the DI has significantly expanded in academic programs that fully meet the needs of the country and the region and respond to international challenges and highly developed facilities and infrastructure that serves all students, researchers and staff and enhances cooperation with other Qatar-based educational and community institutions.

Al Sulaiti said that these remarkable developments led to the DI’s gaining of institutional accreditation from the Quality Assurance Agency in the United Kingdom, the first-ever Qatari academic institution to win the achievement. The accreditation was based on the DI’s excellence in main eight areas including the DI’s social and cultural impacts, strategic investment in human capital, specialized support for students, top-notch educational resources and publishing in world-class journals.

The DI offers MA and PhD tracks through its two schools. The School of Social Sciences and Humanities offers 13 programs in Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology, Politics and International Relations, Linguistics and Arabic Lexicography, Comparative Literature, Media Studies and Journalism, Conflict Management and Humanitarian Action, Critical Security Studies, Psychology and Human Rights. DI’s Executive Director Highlights to QNA World-Class Achievements Ahead of Tomorrow’s 7th MA Cohort Graduation -1-

The School of Economics, Administration, and Public Policy (SEAPP) offers a master’s in public administration, public policy, and development economics, as well as an Executive master’s in public administration. SEAPP has expanded its programs to include the Double Executive Master’s in public administration and Business Administration (MBA – EMPA), in partnership with the European Institute of Management and Technology in Berlin.

Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) launched the Executive Master’s in Diplomatic Studies and International Cooperation for the academic year 2020/2021, receiving students from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)’s diplomatic corps under a memorandum of understanding with its Diplomatic Institute. The Executive Director of the Administration and Finance Division Eman Abdullah Al Sulaiti stated that the number of students accepted this year in both schools reached 306 male and female students, with the percentage of Qatari students standing at 30 percent distributed over 18. She also pointed out that since its establishment in 2015, DI has so far received more than 61,000 applications for admission to the institute.

Al Sulaiti stressed that the doctoral programs are the embodiment of DI’s mission, centered on the production of knowledge in social, humanity, and administrative sciences in Arabic as the main language, without neglecting the use of other languages.

The Executive Director of the Administration and Finance Division added that the doctoral track aims to train generations of Qatari and Arab researchers, as well as other students who wish to join this track, enabling them to pursue their studies and engage in the development of their communities. She noted that the track prepares in-depth researchers armed with the highest levels of academic qualification in their specializations, and by the same token enhances the institute’s contribution to knowledge production in the Arabic language.

Eman Abdullah Al Sulaiti stated that the institute prioritizes the admission of Qatari and Arab students, especially those residing in Qatar, adopting uniform admissions requirements for all, which include holding a bachelor’s degree with a good grade or above, being fluent in the Arabic language, and having a good command of the English language, according to competitive grounds.

She pointed out that the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies offers several scholarships annually, to attract academically qualified students from the State of Qatar and beyond. She detailed that scholarships vary, as some are awarded based on academic merit, whilst others are based on financial needs.

The Executive Director of the Administration and Finance Division said that the Tamim academic merit scholarship is aimed at Qatari and international students in Qatar and the Arab world. The scholarship covers tuition fees and 100 percent of housing fees, in addition to providing health insurance and monthly stipends. She also explained that the Sanad financial need scholarship is intended for Qatari and international students residing in Qatar. The scholarship covers anywhere from 10 to 100 percent of the fees for Qatari and resident students.

At the end of her interview with QNA, Al Sulaiti said that DI’s achievements would not have been possible without the state’s support, as well as its creation of an environment that stimulates research, creativity, and freedom of thought in a way that serves the local, Arab, and global communities.
