1. Dominica was named by Christopher Columbus 

Prior to Christopher Columbus’ arrival on the island, the Caribbean settlers named it Watikbuli, meaning ‘Tall is her Body’. In 1493, Christopher arrived on the island and named it Domingo, which means Sunday, the day which he discovered the island.

2. Dominica has an interesting motto 

The motto is French, ‘Après le Bon Dieu, c’est la Terre’, translated to English as ‘After God, the Earth’, Dominica eloquently displays its natural beauty.

3. Dominica is a republic in the Commonwealth

The Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) is the first long-distance hiking trail in the Caribbean. It is estimated to be 183 km long and is split into 14 sections. The trail was built between 2007 and 2012, the route crosses through Dominica and traverses some of the country’s most spectacular terrain. It will take a minimum of two weeks to complete the hiking trail.

16. Dominica is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site 

The Morne Trois Pitons National Park is the exclusive Heritage Site in Dominica and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. This national park is situated in the southern half of the island and contains many of Dominica’s most spectacular attractions including the Titou Gorge, Boeri, Freshwater Lakes, the Boiling Lake, and the Middleham Falls. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park covers roughly 9 per cent of Dominica’s land area.

Vice Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih has paid tribute to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for his patronage of the Fourth Extraordinary Conference of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).



The UPU conference is set to be held in Riyadh from October 1 to 5.



Holding the UPU’s Fourth Extraordinary Conference under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ patronage is an extension of the unlimited care that the leadership provides to the Saudi postal sector, said Al-Rumaih.



The patronage of the conference also consolidates the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub and an axis connecting three continents, he added.



Enhancing the Kingdom’s position in this field contributes to achieving the ambitious objectives of the National Transport Strategy launched by HRH the Crown Prince, the vice minister noted.



Hosting the conference is a national achievement that confirms the Kingdom’s active role and presence in international organizations, Al-Rumaih said.

The UPU member states voted for the Kingdom’s hosting of the fourth conference during the plenary meeting of the union’s Council of Administration in October last year.

ACCD President: Early Childhood Stage Decisive for Formation and Consolidation of Social Concepts


President of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development (ACCD) Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal bin Abdulaziz said that the early childhood stage is decisive in the formation and consolidation of social concepts and is the stage in which the child gets to know himself or herself and become more independent, creative and innovative. He stressed the need to invest in children at this stage, as it is critical to preserving children’s rights.



In a speech he delivered at the opening of the Regional Forum of the Arab Network for Early Childhood (ANECD), currently being held in Cairo, Prince Abdulaziz said, ‘The child is the gateway to any development. Therefore, since its founding, we at the ACCD have focused on the early childhood stage, which is a strategic axis of the council’s activities, and we have presented in this field many knowledge sources, initiatives, and projects in partnership with the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND) and relevant international and regional organizations’.

KSrelief Launches Fishing Equipment Distribution in Yemen


The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) on Thursday began distributing fishing equipment including containers and life vests to Yemeni fishermen in Al-Mahrah Governorate, Yemen, as part of the emergency assistance project to improve the living conditions of people affected by the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The program was implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).



The project, benefiting 3,000 fishermen, aims to increase fish production, providing the local market with high quality products and improving the living conditions of Yemeni fishermen.



The director of the social affairs office in Al-Mahrah Governorate, Fayez Belhaf, commended the efforts of KSrelief in supporting the fishery sector and alleviating the suffering of the fishermen affected by the humanitarian crisis and natural disasters.



The support to fishermen is part of the humanitarian and relief projects the Kingdom implements in Yemen, through KSrelief, to enhance food security and support farmers and food producers in Yemen.

ZATCA Thwarts Attempt to Smuggle 183,900 Captagon Pills


The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) at Al-Batha port has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 183,900 Captagon pills found hidden in one of the vehicles arriving in the Kingdom through the port.



The authority explained that while inspecting one of the vehicles coming through the Al-Batha port, a large quantity of Captagon pills was found hidden inside the vehicle’s trunk.



ZATCA added that after coordination with the General Directorate of Narcotics Control, the recipient of the items inside the Kingdom was arrested.



The authority stressed that it will continue tightening customs control over the Kingdom’s imports and exports at all its customs outlets and deal with smuggling attempts to protect society from such criminal acts.



The authority also calls on all citizens to help combat smuggling to protect society and the national economy by contacting the designated number for security reports by calling 1910, via e-mail: 1910@zatca.gov.sa or through the international phone number 00966114208417, channels through which the authority receives reports related to smuggling and violations of the provisions of the unified customs system. It stated that it would deal with such reports in strict confidentiality and give a financial reward to the person reporting if the information is correct.
