Khartoum: The Arab League condemned in the strongest terms the coordinated ground and air attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the past three days on the city of Al-Fashir and the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for displaced persons. These attacks resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people, including 20 children and approximately 14 employees of the International Relief Organization (IRO), besides injuring approximately 200 others, according to reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement Monday, the Arab League considered this attack against innocent displaced persons a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024), which called on the RSF to end the siege of Al-Fashir, de-escalate the situation in and around Al-Fashir, and withdraw all fighters who threaten the safety and security of civilians.
The Arab League added that it joins the United Nations in calling for those responsible for the attacks against civilians to be held accountable.
The statement noted that Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps are among the largest displacement camps in Darfur, housing more than 700,000 people who have fled the cycles of violence since 2003. They are once again caught in the crossfire with nowhere safe to turn. The humanitarian catastrophe has been exacerbated by the bombing of water sources and the depletion of food supplies.
