CMU-Q Launches New AI Degree Program Aligned with Qatar’s Strategic Vision

Doha: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) introduced its new Bachelor of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence during an information session, marking a significant development in the educational landscape in line with Qatar's strategic vision for sustainable development.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE), Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi, highlighted that this program is a pivotal advancement in Qatar's education system. It reflects the country's dedication to investing in quality education and advanced knowledge, aligning with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. Dr. Al Nuaimi underscored that artificial intelligence is a key driver of economic and societal change, transforming future work, production, and creativity approaches. The new program offers students a comprehensive study of AI, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications in a high-level academic setting.

Dr. Al Nuaimi further stated the MOEHE's commitment to enhancing higher education by creating and developing innovative academic programs that meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and rapid cognitive advancements. The ministry actively supports initiatives that position Qatar as a regional and international hub for knowledge and scientific research. The partnership with CMU-Q, a leading global institution in computing and AI, strengthens Qatar's role as a regional hub for innovation.

The launch of the AI program also demonstrates a commitment to cultivating national talent capable of competing on the global stage, contributing to the knowledge economy, and supporting sustainable development projects. Dr. Al Nuaimi emphasized the importance of partnerships between educational institutions and the industrial sector to provide students with practical training opportunities, ensuring promising employment prospects for graduates.

Dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick, described the launch of the Bachelor of Science degree in AI as a milestone in the university's journey, enhancing its role in supporting education, technology, and the knowledge economy in Qatar. He recalled CMU-Q's history of pioneering efforts in computing and AI, including the establishment of the world's first college dedicated entirely to computer science. The new AI program aims to prepare a new generation of AI specialists, with graduates expected to contribute significantly to development in Qatar, the Middle East and North Africa region, and globally.

Dr. Samah Gamar, Director of Academic Affairs at the Qatar Foundation (QF), reiterated that the AI program represents a qualitative shift in Qatar's higher education. It aligns with the National Development Strategy and the Qatar National AI Strategy, reflecting CMU-Q's reputation as a global leader in AI. The program has passed all review and quality assurance stages and received MOEHE licenses. Dr. Gamar highlighted the program's comprehensive ethical vision, focused on nurturing human potential and creativity, and equipping graduates with skills applicable in vital sectors such as energy, healthcare, finance, and smart cities.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion with university faculty, exploring the program's competitive advantages and its timely significance. The discussion also addressed the program's contributions to Qatar's short and long-term goals and highlighted key developments in regional AI research, particularly in Arabic language processing.
