NHRC Vice-Chairman Highlights Qatar’s Policies and Legislation Against Racial Discrimination and Human Trafficking


Doha: HE Vice-Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, has praised the provisions of Qatar’s Permanent Constitution and the country’s legislation and public policies designed to prevent racial discrimination and human trafficking. He also emphasized the establishment of institutions to ensure these laws are effectively implemented.



According to Qatar News Agency, this was discussed at a regional forum organized by NHRC at the Bin Jelmood House Museum. The event commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The forum was held in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) through its Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, and the Bin Jelmood House.



Dr. Al Kuwari highlighted NHRC’s role in organizing events related to the forum’s theme and participating in the Human Rights Council’s dialogues on combating racism. He stressed the importance of monitoring developments, bridging legal and practical gaps, and strengthening regional and international standards through cooperation with partners.



The Vice-Chairman stated that the forum aims to address challenges, share experiences, and enhance cooperation among partners to promote dignity, equality, and non-discrimination. He noted that the Bin Jelmood House Museum raises awareness of slavery’s history and the role of Islamic civilization in combating it, reflecting Qatari society’s values of diversity and coexistence.



HE Secretary-General of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, remarked on the commemoration of slavery victims as a reflection of their commitment to human rights. He acknowledged that despite progress, discrimination remains prevalent and stressed the need for a sustainable coexistence model.



Msheireb Museums’ General Manager, Abdulla Al Naama, reiterated their commitment to eliminating discrimination and promoting justice, equality, and solidarity. He highlighted that Bin Jelmood House is unique in its dedication to telling the story of slavery and addressing modern human trafficking issues.



Bushra Elias, representing OHCHR’s Regional Office, emphasized that the commemoration is an opportunity for action, noting ongoing challenges and obstacles to realizing rights. She highlighted the importance of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and the opportunity in 2025 to assess progress and push for necessary reforms.
