NIHR carries out unannounced field visit to Jau Reform and Rehabilitation Centre

A delegation from the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) today carried out an unannounced field visit to the Reform and Rehabilitation Centre in Jau to follow up on the situation of inmates who are on hunger strike.

The visit is based on the mandate of the NIHR to protect and consolidate human rights, in addition to the role entrusted to it in the law promulgating its establishment, the NIHR said in a statement.

The NIHR said that, out of its commitment to transparency, and responsibility to keep the public opinion and relatives informed about the situation of inmates at detention centres, the NIHR’s delegation was keen on meeting a group of the aforementioned inmates.

The NIHR reported no critical health situations among the inmates on hunger strike.

While inspecting the healthcare services delivered to the inmates, the delegation found that health services are provided naturally and regularly to all inmates at various buildings as per standard procedures in those circumstances to ensure the safety and health of inmates.

The NIHR affirmed that it will continue to examine all demands submitted to it by inmates and their compatibility with international human rights standards to ensure that they receive the rights guaranteed by national laws and the relevant international standards.

The NIHR also affirmed that it will continue its field visits to the reform and rehabilitation facilities to ensure that all inmates are receiving their rights fairly.

It also asserted that it will examine all complaints it receives about the violations of the basic rights of individuals.

Complaints may be presented to the NIHR by reporting personally to its Seef District premises or calling its toll-free hotline (80001144).

Violations may also be reported via the smart phone application (NIHR Bahrain) or website (www.nihr.org.bh.).
