Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), said that the leaders of the Council countries are keen to pay attention to the field of environment and wildlife and its development, as well as advancing the process of joint Gulf action in all its aspects.



This came during the secretary general’s participation in the 25th meeting of the GCC Committee of Their Highnesses and Excellencies the Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs.



The meeting was headed by Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals in Oman and Chairman of the current session, with the participation of Their Highnesses and Excellencies the Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs in the GCC countries.



Albudaiwi expressed gratitude and appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, of Oman, Chairman of the current session of the GCC Supreme Council, and to Their Majesties and Highnesses the leaders of the GCC countries for Their constant support to strengthen the process of joint Gulf action in various fields.



He said during his speech at the meeting that the United Arab Emirates’ hosting of the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nation Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 2024, and Qatar’s hosting of the Doha Horticultural Expo 2023 (Expo 2023 Doha) comes as confirmation of the interest of the GCC countries in global environmental and climate issues, addressing them and finding permanent solutions to them.



The secretary general stressed that the GCC General Secretariat is making exceptional efforts for the success of these three events, especially mentioning the great priority given to the success of COP28, and wishing the UAE success in organizing the event.



The meeting reviewed the decisions of the Supreme Council related to the environmental directions of the GCC countries for 2020, the strategic plan of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, and topics related to joint Gulf action in the field of environment and wildlife.
